Ferroxyl is a specialized indicator solution used to detect the presence of iron ions and study corrosion processes, particularly in demonstrations of galvanic or electrochemical corrosion. It contains a mixture of potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) and phenolphthalein in an aqueous solution, which reacts visibly to both ferrous ions (Fe²⁺) and hydroxide ions (OH⁻).

When ferrous ions are released during corrosion, the ferroxyl solution produces a blue color due to the formation of Turnbull’s blue. Simultaneously, hydroxide ions—produced in cathodic regions—turn the phenolphthalein component pink, allowing the visualization of both oxidation and reduction zones. This dual response makes ferroxyl ideal for educational and research settings.
