New Methylene Blue (NMB) is a supravital stain widely used in hematology for the detection of reticulocytes, Heinz bodies, Howell-Jolly bodies, and other intracellular inclusions in red blood cells. It is especially valued for its use in reticulocyte counts, where it stains residual RNA and other cytoplasmic structures, allowing for clear differentiation of immature erythrocytes from mature cells.

Unlike standard methylene blue, New Methylene Blue has improved specificity and reduced background staining, providing sharper contrast and more accurate visual identification under light microscopy. It is also commonly used in veterinary medicine to detect blood cell abnormalities in species such as cats, dogs, and cattle.
